Project history: Ordered on 29.10.1902 from Normand, the design was essentially a lengthened 278 with modified hull lines, intended to test Parsons turbines. Considerably more successful than the Rateau-engined 243, making a maximum of 27.3kts on trials, nevertheless 293 suffered from the high fuel consumption which was the major drawback of early turbine installations.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: She was stricken in 1910 but survived until 1916 as a tender to the engineering school at Brest.
