Project history: Although originally intended to be repeats of the Leander design, progressive improvements have been made. Only Nilgiri had British electronics; the other three had Dutch Signaal radars built under licence by Bharath Electronics in India, and all but Nilgiri had M-4 directors for the Seacat SAMs. The Alouette III helicopter was too long for the original Leander hangar and so a telescoping type was fitted.
